Mae Grace Byers, 79, of Chambersburg, wife of Robert J., passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, October 4, in the Chambersburg Hospital. Born on October 9, 1932 in Chambersburg, she was a daughter of the late Harry Ankerbrand and Margaret Chronister Ankerbrand.

A 1950 graduate of the former Chambersburg High School, Mae worked at the Chambersburg Telephone Company in her earlier years. On July 27, 1952, she married Robert J. Byers and they were married for over 60 years. After several years in Brooklyn, NY and Chambersburg they moved to Maryland where Mae began cosmetology school. Settling in Potomac they raised their family and Mae enjoyed a very successful career as a Hair Stylist until her retirement in 2004. Upon Bob’s retirement, they returned to Chambersburg, where they enjoyed the company of friends, playing tennis and golf as members of Chambersburg Country Club. Mae pursued her love of outdoor gardening and raising exotic orchids. She was often found absorbed in a puzzle or a good book. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and being known as "Nanny".

Aside from her husband, Mae is survived by two children, Robin Volpe (and husband, Dr. Michael) of Sparta, NJ and Robert C. Byers (and wife, Cristina) of Arlington, VA; brothers, Harry Ankerbrand Jr. (and wife, Sondra) of Baltimore, MD and Ray Ankerbrand (and wife, Linda) of Chambersburg; sisters, Helen Bishop of Chambersburg, Louise Basinger of Pittsburgh, and Shelby Hull (and husband, Richard) of Clemson, SC; three grandchildren, Megan Tillery (and husband, William), Grace Hemenway (and husband, Scott) and Jessica Mae Byers; four great grandchildren, Molly Simon, Emma Tillery, Taylor and Scott Hemenway. She was preceded in death by one brother, George Ankerbrand.

A memorial service will be held at 11 AM on Friday, October 12, in the chapel of the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, with Rev. Paul B. Baker officiating. Inurnment will follow in Norland Cemetery. There will be no public viewing; however the family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-8 PM on Thursday and one hour prior to the service on Friday.
