Irvin Sleighter

Irvin R. Sleighter, Jr., age 88, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away at Menno Haven Penn Hall on Monday, October 1, 2012. Born July 6, 1924 in Chambersburg, PA, he was the son of the late Irvin R. Sleighter, Sr. and the late Martha Walker Sleighter.
A US Army veteran, Mr. Sleighter served honorably during both WWII and the Korean Conflict. Mr. Sleighter worked for the US Postal Service for over 30 years, retiring in 1992 as an Assistant Post Master. He was an active member of the Chambersburg First Church of God, where he served as a deacon and recording secretary for 46 years, he also served as a financial secretary and vice president of the church board. In addition he was a member of the former Church of God Winebrenner Brotherhood, where he served at the National Level. Mr. Sleighter was also a member of NARFE and AARP.
Surviving is his wife of 63 years, Gladys V. Holstay Sleighter whom he married on April 17, 1949; three children, Carol A Shew (Rev. Dr. Gary) of New Bloomfield, PA, Irvin R. Sleighter III (Beverly) of Chambersburg, PA, and Robert E. Sleighter (Debrah) of Waynesboro, PA, six grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, John Walker Sleighter.
Family and Friends are welcome to attend Graveside services on Thursday, October 4, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Parklawns Memorial Gardens, 3218 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, PA; where Pastor Stanley Darrah will officiate. Arrangements are entrusted to the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Chambersburg, PA. The family requests the omission of flowers, and if desired contributions in his name to the Child Evangelism Fellowship, PO Box 6, Waynesboro, PA 17268.
