Isabel H. Vanderau, 98, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away on Monday, March 28, 2016 at Penn Hall Nursing Center. Born August 10, 1917 in Chambersburg, she was a daughter of the late William B. and Clara E. Hays Pentz. Her beloved husband, Val W. “Bill” Vanderau, whom she married on May 16, 1945, preceded her in death in 2001.
Isabel was a 1935 graduate of the former Chambersburg High School. She then attended Chambersburg Business School. She was employed at Chambersburg Laundry from 1936 until 1945. A homemaker most of her adult life, she later worked at Eyerly’s Department Store and then BonTon. She was a member of Central Presbyterian Church, Order of Easter Star, Martha Custis Chapter 342 in Chambersburg and the Chambersburg Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed gardening, knitting, and painting.
She is survived by two children, Christine V. Long of Chambersburg and Douglas W. Vanderau and wife Cecilia of Hagerstown, MD; two granddaughters, Quinn M. O’Neill and husband Thomas of Chambersburg and Kathleen A. Vanderau and fiancé, James Doody of Ithaca, NY; and a great-granddaughter Claire O’Neill. In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her sister, Margaret P. Wingert.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, April 4, 2016 in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA 17202. Rev. Scott Bowerman will officiate. Interment will follow the service in Norland Cemetery. The family will receive friend one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Central Presbyterian Church, 40 Lincoln Way West, Chambersburg, PA 17201 or to Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter, 5051 Letterkenny Road West, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
