Iva Mary (Schlear) Cairns, a longtime Reading, Pa., resident died Tuesday evening, July 20, 2021, at the age of 97.
An avid gardener and reader, Iva was married to Edward Cairns for 63 years and had one son, Scott. Eddie and Iva loved attending Penn State football games and traveling to as many major league baseball parks as possible. They were both active in their church, Calvary United Methodist Church in Mohnton, Pa.
Born in 1924 to Walter and Laura Schlear, Iva grew up in Reading and graduated from Reading High School in 1941. At 19, she began training at Reading Hospital to become a nurse through the U.S. Cadet Nursing Corps, a program created to alleviate the nursing shortage in World War II.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 2011 and her sister, Josephine Neider, in 2012. After her husband died, she moved to Chambersburg, Pa. to be closer to her son. She is survived by Scott and Virginia, of Chambersburg, two grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
A private service will be held at a later date for the immediate family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Calvary UMC, 1 West Wyomissing Avenue, Mohnton, PA 19540. Arrangements are entrusted to Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg, PA.
