James Franklin Carey, Sr., age 94, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away on Sunday morning, June 14, 2015 at his home. Born July 17, 1920 in Brownsville, he was a son of the late John Henry and Catherine Ketterman Carey. He beloved wife, Thelma M. Herdman Carey, preceded him in death on December 4, 2008.
A U.S. Army veteran, James served honorably during World War II. Following his discharge, he worked as a foreman for the Borough of Chambersburg until his retirement in 1984. James was a member of The Open Door Church in Chambersburg, the NRA and the Friendship Fire Co. He enjoyed collecting coins, antiques, hunting and was always active.
He is survived by three children, James F. Carey, Jr. (fiancé Sheri), Darlene Young, and Loretta Myers, all of Chambersburg; six grandchildren, Timothy Carey (wife Anna) of Chambersburg, James F. Carey III (wife Carla) of Chambersburg, Alan Heinbaugh of Chambersburg, Trinity Ricchi of FL, Sara Engle (husband Jesse) of Chambersburg, and Israel Myers of Chambersburg; eleven great-grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; and a sister, Charlotte Straley of Chambersburg. In addition to his wife and parents, James is preceded in death by five brothers, Charles A., George, Harry, Joe, and Leroy Carey; and two sisters, Mary and Frances.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, June 19, 2015 at Parklawns Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are entrusted to Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Chambersburg, PA.
