James Golden

James Patrick Golden, age 80, of Chambersburg, died on Sunday, January 19, 2014 in the Chambersburg Hospital.

Born September 18, 1933 in Dunmore, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Stanley and Hannah Kearney Golden.

Mr. Golden was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church.

A 1952 graduate of Dunmore Senior High School, he attended Temple University. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict.

As a young man he worked for the UNIVAC division of the Remington Rand Corporation, as a customer engineer for maintenance of the earliest UNIVAC computers. He later was employed by the U.S. Army at Tobyhanna Army Depot and other Army installations before moving to Chambersburg. He retired from the Depot Systems Command in 1988.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1426 where he was a third-degree Knight, co-founder and charter member of the Tarquino-Washabaugh Catholic War Veterans Post 1930 where he was past First Vice Commander, a member of the AMVETS Post 224, the American Legion Post 46, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1599 and the Joint Veterans Council of Franklin County where he was past Vice Commander.

He and his wife Marie Bossert Golden were married February 7, 1959 in St. Vincent’s Catholic Church in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

In addition to his wife, surviving are four daughters, Cynthia (Mrs. Jeremy) Somers of Pittsburgh, Suzanne Golden (Mrs. Brian Kadel) of Chambersburg, Patricia (Mrs. Bill) Passavanti of Marietta, Georgia, Lori Golden Swanger of Chambersburg; a son, James W. of Rhode Island and ten grand children (Jessica, Kaleigh, Elizabeth, Mac, Hannah, Tessa, Emma, Jack, Caroline and Sophia) as well as three great-grandchildren (Anslie, Amara, Rylan.) He is also survived by a niece, Ellen Golden Tyrell of St. Petersburg, Florida, and nephew Thomas Golden of Dunmore and many great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Rita and two brothers, Stanley and Jack.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, January 23 at 1:00 p.m. at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Ave. The Rev. James R. O’Brien will officiate. Burial will follow in Corpus Cemetery, with a military graveside service conducted by members of the Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard. Viewing will be held from 7 to 9 P.M. on Wednesday, January 22 in Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The family requests the omission of flowers.
