James Hyatt

June 3, 1921 — July 17, 2011

James R. Hyatt, of Chambersburg, PA, died Sunday morning, July 17, 2011. Born June 3, 1924 in Schnectady, NY, he was a son of the late James M. and Alice Rothwell Hyatt. A graduate of Newton High School in Newton, MA, he enrolled at Cornell University in 1942 and that same year entered the US Army in Ithaca, NY. Jim served as an aerial photographer with the 451st Bomber Group during WWII. He flew more than 38 missions over Europe and was held as a POW in German prison camps for the last six months of the war. During his time in the military he was awarded numerous decorations for his service including the Purple Heart and Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters.
Following his discharge from the Army, Jim completed his degree at Cornell University in 1948 and joined the H.J. Heinz Company in Pittsburgh. He moved to Chambersburg in 1957 where he was employed as Production Manager at the local Heinz plant. In 1969, he was named Plant Manager. Jim was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist in Chambersburg. He served on numerous boards of community organizations. He was currently a member of the Chambersburg Rotary Club and was serving on the Board of Directors of BOPIC.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Chase Miller, whom he married September 29, 1945; his son, Robert C. Hyatt and wife Janet of Orrstown; his daughter, Alice H. Hawbaker and husband Steve of Scotland; granddaughter Jennifer Hyatt-Meyering and husband Brad of Elbert, CO; a grandson David James Foreman and wife Angela of Annandale, VA; and three great-granddaughters, Olivia and Kaylee Meyering, and Kassen Foreman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Donald L. Hyatt, and a great-grandson, James Chase Foreman.
It was his wish to have private graveside services which will be held at the convenience of the family.
