James Musslewhite

James E. Musslewhite, age 91, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away on Saturday, July 12, 2014 in the Menno Haven Nursing Home. Born May 24, 1923, in Tyler, TX, he was the son of the late Edgar Barton and Annie Mae Scott Musslewhite.
A U.S. Navy veteran, Jim served honorably during WWII. After the Japanese attack of Pearl Harbor in 1941, he volunteered to serve and spent three and one-half years in the U.S. Navy. He was assigned to Naval Intelligence in New Orleans. After 2 years he volunteered for active duty and was sent to Okinawa where he served until the end of the war as an aide to then Captain Hyman G. Rickover, who served as an Admiral and was famous as the “father” of our nuclear navy.
Jim spent 46 years working for several railroads. He began his career as a steno clerk and retired as Assistant Vice President with Consolidated Rail Corp. in Philadelphia, PA. Prior to Conrail, he was AVP of the Lehigh Railroad and the Penn Central Railroad.
Jim was a member of the Chambersburg Church of Christ and served as an Elder of several congregations.
He was a man of many interests. Jim was a past PA State President of the Sons of the American Revolution and also belonged to the PA Society, Sons of The Revolution. His hobbies included genealogy, reading (particularly U.S. history and biographies) and golf. He generously gave of his time to help others with their genealogies which enabled them to become members of SAR and DAR.
He is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Elva Rebecca Adams Musslewhite, whom he married on December 24, 1941; his son, Lon E. Musslewhite and his wife Kathleen of Potomac, MD; and three granddaughters, Sarah Worrall of Philadelphia, PA, Elizabeth Musslewhite of Ellicott City, MD, and Caroline Musslewhite of Potomac, MD.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at 1:00 PM in the Chapel at Menno Haven, 2075 Scotland Ave., Chambersburg, PA. A reception will be held following the service. James was a long-time donor to the Timothy Hill Children’s Ranch on Long Island. Memorial contributions can be made to 298 Middle Road, Riverhead, NY 11901 or online.
