James Frederick “Fred” Shives, 80, known to his son’s friends as “Ferd”, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away Tuesday morning, April 18, 2017 in Chambersburg Hospital. Born February 25, 1937 in McConnellsburg, he was a son of the late Theodore Roosevelt and Clara Hazel Mellott Shives. A design draftsman, he retired from Manitowoc in 2000. Following his retirement, he was employed for 4-5 years at Johnnies Restaurant and Hotel Services in Chambersburg. He had attended St. Paul Lutheran Church in McConnellsburg. Early in his life he enjoyed working on and rebuilding cars. He loved flowers and enjoyed playing the guitar. He had a great sense of humor and loved to make people laugh.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia J. Shatzer Shives, whom he married December 1, 1963; two brothers, Edgar “Mack” M. Shives (Wynell) of McConnellsburg and Theodore R. Shives, II (Donna) of Greencastle; four sisters, Nellie J. Richards of McConnellsburg, Mary L. Decker (Arnold) of St. Thomas, Doris A. Agesen (William) of McConnellsburg, and Linda C. Kelso (Alan) of McConnellsburg; his brother-in-law, Leonard Shatzer (Linda) of Chambersburg; special nephew Emory Shatzer of Chambersburg; and numerous other nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Brian E. Shives in June of 2014; and his brother, Richard F. Shives in January of 1989.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Greencastle, 130 N. Washington St. Greencastle, PA 17225. Rev. Martin H. Horn will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Arrangements are entrusted to Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Chambersburg, PA.
