James Woods

James B. Woods, 85, of Chambersburg, passed away on Wednesday, January 13, 2021 at Fox Subacute in Mechanicsburg, PA. Born July 18, 1935 in Crown Point, NY, he was a son of the late Ashley King Woods and Nellie Peacock Woods.

Jim enlisted in the US Army at the age of 17. He continued his education after joining the army through extension courses which included many college credits from numerous military schools he attended. He spent 26 years in the army with assignments in Korea, Austria, France, Vietnam, Germany and many stateside duty assignments. He concluded his military career as Command Sergeant Major of the Depot System Command at Letterkenny Army Depot. Following his retirement from the army, Jim was then employed at Letterkenny as a civilian in DESCOM and SIMA as a supply systems analyst until 1990. He was a life member of VFW Post 1599, The Marne Corps League, American Legion Post 46 and the Amvets Post 224, all in Chambersburg.

He is survived by three children, Barbara A. Evans and husband Chuck of Fayetteville, Steven M. Woods of Greensburg, and Thomas J. Woods of Chambersburg; five sisters, Rita Hurlburt of Ticonderoga, NY, Myrtle Witherbee of Ticonderoga, NY, Pat Sprague of Moriah Center, NY, Eva Provancha of Port Henry, NY and Betty French of Mineville, NY; two brothers, Chester Woods of Mineville, NY and Henry Woods of Crown Point, NY; longtime friend and companion, Bonnie F. Woods of Chambersburg. He is also survived by his former wife and mother of his children, Karin I. Schlegel Woods of Linz, Austria. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by three brothers, Vain, Herbie and Leonard Woods; and three sisters, Ruby Knickerbocker, Lena Snow and Cora Beeman.

Services will be private. Arrangements are entrusted to Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Chambersburg, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 7023, Merrifield, VA 22116-7023.
