Janet O'Connor

Janet Elaine O’Connor, 88, of Chambersburg, PA and formerly of Charlottesville, VA, died March 4, 2013 at Menno Haven. Janet was born April 23, 1924 in Meadville, PA to the late Thomas Emory Kane II and Mildred Mae (McMahon) Kane. She attended the Pennsylvania Conservatory of Music and Thiel College before marrying Joseph B. O’Connor. They shared 40 years of marriage until his death in 1989.

As an Army wife, Janet lived in Nagasaki and Okinawa, Japan for several years during the 1950s. After returning to the United States, her home was Charlottesville, VA. Janet began a career with the U.S. government retiring in 1990 after 27 years of service from Army Foreign Science and Technology Center. Upon retirement, Janet spent ten years volunteering as a tutor to help adults learn to read and pass the GED exam. Janet was also a member of Cherry Avenue Christian Church. In 2000, Janet moved to Chambersburg, PA and transferred her membership to First United Methodist Church, where she tutored in the afterschool program. She was also a member of the AARP and the Chambersburg YMCA, where she faithfully worked out three times weekly. Janet enjoyed her community; she participated in a book group and attended neighborhood luncheons. Janet made friends wherever she went.

Surviving are a daughter, Amy O. Sabri (husband Dr. Philip) of Chambersburg, PA; a son, Kevin J. O’Connor (wife Cindy) of Chantilly, VA; and six grandchildren, Maureen Sabri, Brian Sabri, Kaitlyn Sabri, Patrick O’Connor, Kyle O’Connor, and Kelsey O’Connor. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Dr. Jack Kane and Thomas E. Kane III.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 8, at First United Methodist Church, 225 S. Second St., Chambersburg, PA with Rev. Dick Williams officiating. A viewing will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 7, 2013 at the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA and one hour prior to the service at the above church and address. A graveside service will be held at the Monticello Memory Gardens in Charlottesville, VA on Sat. March 9 at 11:00 AM.

Memorial contributions can be made to First United Methodist Church, 225 South Second Street or the Chambersburg YMCA, 570 East McKinley Street, both in Chambersburg, PA 17201.
