Janet L. (Eckenrode) Shatzer, Loving and dedicated mother, grandmother, wife and friend, cashed in on “Amazing Grace” on Tuesday, June 29, 2021 at the age of 80 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by family and friends (all loved ones) who will continue to honor her legacy by living their lives to their fullest. Born January 1941 she was the daughter of the late William and Lorena G. (Lee) Eckenrode.
She was a graduate of the Chambersburg High School with the Class of 1959. Janet was then employed for the Stanley Company, Chambersburg as a seamstress for a number of years. Janet was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Chambersburg where she was a member of the Hope Sunday School Class and where she volunteered in the Clothing Room and the Thursday Night Hungry Hearts Program. She also was a part of the church based work camps for eight years volunteering along the East Coast. Janet was also a former member of the local TOPS Club and enjoyed attended meetings. She also volunteered at the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter and at Dress-to-a-Tea both in Chambersburg.
A special place in Janet’s heart was reserved for her grandson and joy of her life, Casey Lee Shatzer. Every wall in her home has at least two pictures of this striking young man. She enjoyed trips to the beach, attending Casey’s many baseball games and sporting events and spending time with her family, which includes all her extended family at First United Methodist Church. Her highlights of 2021 were attending Casey’s 12th birthday party in person and watching him pitch a gem of a baseball game at Greenvillage from the car.
For the better part of 2019-2021, the majority of her time was in hospitals, healthcare facilities, hospice and bed. However, there was never a complaint to be heard. She taught courage, faith and strength, even as her own physical strength disappeared. Rest in peace knowing that you are at your new home without pain and suffering. God bless everyone for your thoughts, prayers, concerns, cards, calls and visits. You are greatly appreciated by our entire family!
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Ronald L. Shatzer; a son, Samuel L. Shatzer and his wife Pamela K. Shatzer of Chambersburg; a grandson and joy of her life, Casey Shatzer; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by two brothers, William and Steven Eckenrode and a sister, Barbara Bowers.
