Jay E. Black, 86, of Chambersburg, PA passed away Monday, April 18, 2022 in Menno Haven’s Brookview Healthcare Center. Born January 14, 1936 in Chambersburg he was the son of the late Harry Black, Sr. and Rhoda (Buterbaugh) Black.
He was a graduate of Chambersburg High School with the Class of 1953. Following high school, he served in the United States Army in Germany from 1959 until 1961. He went on to serve in the Army Reserves until his honorable discharge in 1965. Jay was employed as a truck driver for Sunoco for 33 years retiring in 1996.
Jay was a member of the Amvets Post 224, the Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599, the American Legion Post 46, the Marine Corps League, and the Moose Club all in Chambersburg, PA. He was an avid train and railway memorabilia collector and he also belonged to the Cumberland Valley Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Virginia “Ginger” (Haulman) Black who he married March 16, 1963; three children, Kim Kegerreis and her husband Jody of Chambersburg, Brett Black and his wife Lisa of Shippensburg, PA and Michelle Black of Chambersburg; three granddaughters, Katie Winner and her husband Wesley of Littlestown, PA, Lauren Elyard and her husband Spencer of Lusby, MD and Emily Black of Morgantown, WV; two great-grandchildren, Linnea Winner and Owen Elyard; a sister, Lois Black of Chambersburg and a sister-in-law Jean Black of Chambersburg. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Harry Black, Jr.
A graveside service will be held 2:00 PM, Thursday, April 21, 2022 in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, 3218 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, PA 17201.
