Jay Paul “Blue” Helman, age 70, of Chambersburg, PA passed away on Thursday, October 3, 2013 at his home with his family by his side. Born November 29, 1942 in Chambersburg, PA, he was the son of Luella Benshoff Helman and the late Paul Helman.
Mr. Helman worked for Fayetteville Contractors for 26 years and for Guilford Township for 13 years before retiring in 2009. He was a member of Wykoff Capers Association, Sinnemahoning Sportsman’s Association, North American Hunting Club, and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. An avid outdoorsman, Jay loved spending time with his family at the cabin, spending time in the woods and among nature. He enjoyed hunting, woodworking, canoeing, and going upstate to hear the Elk bugle.
Surviving is his wife of 49 years, Shirley Sord Helman, whom he married August 1, 1964; three children, Annetta Sprow (husband Mike) of Chambersburg, PA, Connie Marshall of Chambersburg, PA, and Daryl Helman (wife Crystal) of St. Thomas, PA; three grandchildren, Trevor Hoffeditz, Curtis, and Quentin Marshall; one great-grandson, Preston Marshall; and three siblings, Carl Helman (wife Joan) of Fayetteville, PA, Linda Whisler (husband Steve) of Waynesboro, PA, and Duane Helman (wife Loretta) of Waynesboro, PA. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Lauren Hamby and a brother, Harold Helman.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at 10 AM in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Rd., Chambersburg, PA; where Rev. Lester F. Stine will officiate. The family will receive friends on Monday, October 7, 2013 from 6 - 9 PM and one hour prior to the service in the funeral home.
