Jay Upperman

Jay T. Upperman, 91, of Chambersburg, PA, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, October 5, 2021 at Chambers Pointe Menno Haven. Born March 24, 1930 in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late Oliver and Elizabeth Martin Upperman.

Jay was a 1949 graduate of the former Chambersburg High School. A US Air Force Veteran, Jay served honorably during the Korean War. He then attended Shippensburg University and graduated in 1958. Jay was employed at the former United Telephone Co. until his retirement, serving in Hanover, Carlisle, Butler and Chambersburg. Strong in his faith, he was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Chambersburg and a former member of King Street United Brethren Church. He was also a member of VFW Post 1599, AARP 2840, and was active in the United Way Campaigns in Carlisle and Butler, PA, Boy Scouts of America, Kiwanis Club, and co-chaired an older adult ministry for 10 years at First United Methodist Church, with his wife Betty. Jay loved to garden and spend time with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed golf, tennis, cheering on the Redskins, playing bridge and traveling.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Betty Miller Upperman, whom he married on August 22, 1959; two children, Bradley Upperman (Leslie) of Evanston, IL, and Sallie Upperman Terlecki (John) of Pittsburgh; three grandchildren, Abigail Upperman, Jack Upperman and Olivia Terlecki; and two siblings, Dorothy Coy and Richard Upperman both of FL. In addition to his parents, Jay was preceded in death by four brothers, Kenneth, Paul, Donald and Herbert Upperman; and three sisters, Marion Miller, Janet Hammond and his twin Jane Smith.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, October 13, 2021 at First United Methodist Church, 225 S. Second Street, Chambersburg, PA 17201. Rev. Dr. Diane Salter and Pastor Steven Livermore will officiate. The family will receive relatives and friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Everyone in attendance is encouraged to wear a mask and social distancing guidelines will be observed. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church to the above address. Arrangements are entrusted to Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg, PA.
