Jeryl Miller

Jeryl C. “Jerry” Miller, 81, of Chambersburg, passed away on Friday, February 25, 2022 in the Chambersburg Hospital. He was born April 13, 1940 in Chambersburg, the second of a set of twins to the late Charles E. “Booker” Miller and Thelma “Tony” Jones Miller.

Jeryl graduated seventh in the Class of 1958 from the Chambersburg Area Senior High School. He then went on to obtain his bachelor’s degree from Shippensburg University in 1962. While there he was a member of Sigma Pi social fraternity and Phi Sigma Pi and Kappa Delta honorary fraternities.

He then went on to serve in the United States Air Force ending a 14 month tour in Vietnam as a meteorologist for which he received the Air Force Commendation Medal. While in the Air Force he obtained his master degree in meteorology from Texas A & M. Upon returning to Chambersburg he joined the family business of Charles W. Karper Inc. and served as vice president and secretary until his retirement in 2011.

Jeryl was very involved in the community, serving as a director of Franklin Financial and F&M Trust for 1983 until 2011. He was also past director of the Coyle Free Library, CADC, and South Penn Motor Club. He was a longtime member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Chambersburg where he served as deacon, elder, trustee, treasurer and vice president.

Interested in the arts, he was a member of musical groups as well as visual arts. He enjoyed working with pastels and had received awards for his works. Jeryl was also the first president of the Franklin County Arts Alliance. He also enjoyed time spent on the golf course with his Wednesday Golf Group and playing duplicate bridge. Together with his wife they enjoyed extensive travels, especially to their “happy place” Anguilla, British West Indies in the winters.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Carolyn “Cookie” Karper Miller, whom he married on May 30, 1966; two sons, Charles “Chip” Karper Miller, wife Christina of Brooklyn, NY and their children, Madeleine and Isabella; Jonathan “Jon” Hade Miller, wife Angela and their children Mackenzie and Cooper of Chambersburg. He was preceded in death by his twin sister, Brenda K. Benedict.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, April 9, 2022 in St. John’s United Church of Christ, 1811 Lincoln Way East, Chambersburg, PA 17202 with Rev. Caroline E. Saxton officiating. For those of you who cannot attend, the service will be live streamed at https://sjucc1811.org/ Arrangements are entrusted to the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church Saturday morning.

The family requests in lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s UCC, 1811 Lincoln Way East, Chambersburg, PA 17202 or to the Council for the Arts, 103 N. Main Street, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
