Jo Ann Smith Dittmann, 94, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away Saturday afternoon, July 16, 2022 at Brookview Healthcare Center. Born November 14, 1927 in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of the late Thomas W. and Josephine B. Stine Smith. She earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree from Shippensburg University; a second Bachelor’s Degree from Wilson College; and her Juris Doctorate Degree from Dickinson School of Law. Jo Ann taught English at the Chambersburg Area Senior High School and served as Dean of Students at the former Penn Hall Junior College. She practiced law in Chambersburg and McConnellsburg; served as Assistant District Attorney in Northumberland County; and later worked for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Jo Ann was a member of Central Presbyterian Church; the Pennsylvania Bar Association; the Maryland Bar Association; the Franklin County Bar Association; and served on the Board for Family Health Services of South Central Pennsylvania.
She is survived by her daughter, Julie Shuchman; her son, Gerald P. Dittmann and wife Kathy; two grandsons, Thomas Starr and wife Jamie Lynn, and Andrew Dittmann and wife Amy; her granddaughter Sara Clark and husband Zac; three great-grandchildren, Gabriel, Naomi, and Silas; and several cousins.
A memorial service to celebrate Jo Ann’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, August 16, 2022 at the Menno Haven Life Center, 300 Ridgeview, Chambersburg, PA with Rev. Lori Witmer officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Private interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg, PA.
