Joan M. Smith, 88, a resident at The Village of Laurel Run, and formerly of 55 Shadle Drive, Fayetteville, PA, passed away Saturday, July 25, 2015 at the nursing home. Born March 27, 1927 in Altoona, PA, she was a daughter of the late Frederick H. and Irma E. Boslet Resig. Joan was a graduate of the Altoona Catholic High School and Mercy Hospital School of Nursing. A Registered Nurse, she retired from Bethesda Naval Hospital in 1973. She was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Her hobbies included gardening and tending to her rose bushes, painting ceramics, needlepoint, and cooking. She especially enjoyed visiting with family. Her husband, William L. Smith, whom she married May 15, 1952 in Altoona, preceded her in death on April 28, 1979.
She is survived by two sisters, Clara M. Tomlinson of Altoona and Erma J. Mathews of Cordova, TN; numerous nieces and nephews; and her caregiver and special friend, Deborah A. Howe of Orrtanna, PA. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant sister, Dorothy J. Resig.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Fr. Dominic M. DiBiccaro at 1:00 PM Wednesday, July 29, 2015 at Corpus Christi Church, 320 Philadelphia Avenue, Chambersburg, PA. Interment will follow at Corpus Christi Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:30AM – 12:30 PM Wednesday at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA.
