Joann Poppenwimer, age 83, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away at her home on Saturday, January 9, 2016. Born January 11, 1932, in Altoona, PA, she was the daughter of the late John and Eileen Schleich Whitfield.
A 1949 graduate of the Altoona High School, Mrs. Poppenwimer went on to Altoona School of Nursing, where she became a registered nurse. She worked at the Chambersburg Hospital from 1953 – 1980. She was a member of the Chambersburg Bible Church. Mrs. Poppenwimer enjoyed sewing, cooking, reading, crafts, travelling, and gardening, however her most cherished past time was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Surviving is her husband of 62 years, Louis A. Poppenwimer, whom she married in 1953; four children, Linda S. Poppenwimer of Naples, FL, Larry A. Poppenwimer of Etters, PA, Mark L. Poppenwimer (wife Connie) of Leesburg, VA, and Lisa J. Righter ( husband Keith) of York, PA; former daughter-in-law, Dawn Poppenwimer; grandchildren, Grant (wife Casey), Kyle (Mel), Corey (wife Allison), Emily (husband Nate), Tyler, and Josh; and two siblings, Jean Hooper of Mechanicsburg, PA and John Whitfield of Claymont, DE.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 14, 2016, at 10 AM in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Rd., Chambersburg, PA, where Pastor Garry Yoder and Minister David Stahl will officiate. The family will receive friends in the funeral home on Wednesday, January 13, 2016, from 6 – 8 PM and one hour prior to the service in the funeral home. Interment will follow the service in Parklawns Memorial Gardens.
