Joel Black

January 26, 1991 — January 29, 2023

Joel James Black, 32, of Chambersburg, PA passed away Sunday, January 29, 2023 after a long battle with leukemia while at UPMC Shadyside in Pittsburgh, PA. He was born January 26, 1991 in Bedford to James “Jim” and Judy (Clark) Black of Bedford, PA. In addition to his parents, Joel is survived by his wife of six years, Danielle (Troutman) Black, daughter to Jeff and Kris Troutman of Everett; his brother, Jared Black of Bedford; his maternal grandmother, Grace (Allison) Clark of Schellsburg; and a number of uncles, aunts, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Ned Clark and his paternal grandparents, John and Lois (Corley) Black.

Joel was a graduate of Bedford High School Class of 2009. He went on to obtain his bachelor’s degree in Communications from the University of Pittsburgh Johnstown, followed by his MBA from Liberty University. For many years, Joel worked in politics; running campaigns, lobbying at the capital, and working for Representative Jesse Topper. His career progressed as he worked at both Bedford and Chambersburg’s Chambers of Commerce. He also worked for Lehman’s Engineering as a client services rep. Most recently, Joel took a position teaching business at James Buchanan High School. He was working towards his teacher’s certification and discovered in his two years of teaching, that it was one of his favorite jobs. He was passionate about his work and left an impact on many throughout his varied careers.

Joel loved people. He enjoyed networking and making connections wherever he went whether on the job, at church, in a bar, or at the hospital. He was quick to make friends. He was a member of the Free & Accepted Masons Hollidaysburg Lodge #220 and of the York Right. He was an active member and elder at Mission Hill Church in Chambersburg. He loved to study the Bible, read theology books, and teach when given the opportunity. Joel’s free time consisted of many varied interests. He owned many smokers and loved all things barbeque. He enjoyed a fine whiskey and a cigar. He loved camping and reading a book with a beer on the beach. Joel had a competitive spirit from cornhole, Fortnite, Magic, and trivia nights—the challenge of the game was always fun. Sports was another love—playing softball, golfing, going to Penguins games, watching football, championing fantasy football leagues, or betting on a fight. If it was a sport, Joel was into it.

Joel loved other people, his family, and friends but none more than Dani. They were introduced by mutual friends and quickly fell in love. She was his biggest supporter and best friend. They enjoyed time together, time with others, quiet mornings with their cat babies (Tater & Tot), and many adventures. There were lots of dreams for the future. When he became sick, she was by his side and they treasured every moment. Joel never gave up on those future dreams and will be greatly missed. It may seem he lost the battle, but through grace and by his faith, he has victory in the Lord.
