John William Baker, 72, of Chambersburg, passed away Sunday, October 18, 2015 at the Chambersburg Hospital. Born September 18, 1943 in Chambersburg, PA, he was a son of the late Willie and Maude Turner Baker. John was a 1961 graduate of the Chambersburg High School and served with the US Air Force for four years. He was employed early in his life with SunnyHill Properties in Chambersburg and then worked for most of his life as a self-employed contractor, owning and operating Baker Construction until his retirement in 2012. He loved visiting with his family and friends and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of King Street United Brethren Church and the Greene Township Lions Club. John’s hobbies included hunting and golf. His beloved wife, Barbara C. “Sis” Ewan Baker, whom he married December 9, 1968, preceded him in death on October 10, 2014.
He is survived by his son, Michael John Baker and wife Cynthia of Belton, TX; two grandchildren, Michelle and Brandon Baker; three sisters, Mildred Wilder of Harlen, KY, Mossie Sites of Chambersburg, and Jean Bumbaugh of Shippensburg; three brothers, Berry Baker and wife Sarah of Chambersburg, Rastus “Rat” Baker of Chambersburg, and Bill Baker and wife Shelva of Fayetteville; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Otis and Denny Baker; and a sister, Mabel Frederick.
All are invited to attend a graveside service at 2:00 PM Friday, October 23, 2015 at Fetterhoff Chapel Cemetery. Rev. Dennis Sites will officiate.
