John Cleary

John E. “Butch” Cleary, age 67, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away on Thursday, November 22, 2018. Born December 11, 1950, in Chambersburg, PA, he was the son of the late John M. and Maxine H. Woodal Cleary.
A U.S. Army Veteran, Butch served honorably during the Vietnam Conflict. He retired from U.S. Army in 1985 as a CW4 after 16 years of service. Butch was awarded numerous medals during his career and service in Vietnam, to include the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Air Medal, Army commendation Medal W/Device 1960, and Purple Heart, among others. After retirement from the Army, Butch continued his service to the Country at Letterkenny Army Depot, retiring in 2011 as an IT Specialist/Section Chief Capacity Services for the Asset Maintenance Branch. An amazing husband and father, Butch loved to spend time with family and friends. He also enjoyed golf, Alabama Football, and Hunting. He was a member of the Waynesboro Fish and Game.
Surviving is his beloved wife of 43 years, Barbara Rock Cleary, whom he married in 1975; his cherished daughter, Nicky D. Cleary of Fayetteville, PA; siblings, Robin Terry, Bonita “Sue” Cross, James P. Cleary (wife Angela) , and George Q. Cleary; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two siblings, Earl “Sonny” Cleary, and Trudy Cleary Monn; and a brother-in-law, Tony Cross.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 28, 2018, at 10 AM in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Rd., Chambersburg, PA, where Deacon Charles Quivers will officiate. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 27, 2018, from 6 – 8 PM and one hour prior to the service in the funeral home on Wednesday. Interment will follow the service at Mt. Zion Cemetery, where Military Honors will be rendered. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made in in his name to the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8517.
