August 6, 1952 — July 25, 2011

John W. Hepfer Jr., age 58, of Chambersburg, died unexpectedly on Monday, July 25, 2011 in the UPMC- Presbyterian in Pittsburgh. Born on August 6, 1952 in Chambersburg, he was a son of John W. Hepfer Sr. of Chambersburg and the late Phyllis Jenkins Hepfer.

A U.S. Marine, John was easily considered to be a “Jack of All Trades.” He owned and operated his own handyman service years ago, as well a photography business. His other vocations included managing a local pet store, working for Brechbill and Helman, the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter, and most recently, U.S. Security Associates. A social member of the VFW Post 1599, John was an accomplished martial artist, earning his black belt in tae kwon do. He enjoyed the game of golf and loved the Green Bay Packers. John had a tremendous heart, and he demonstrated it daily with his compassion toward others, especially animals. He had a particular devotion to Jack Russell Terriers, adopting many over the years.

Aside from his father, John is survived by 3 children, Jennifer Cappuccio of Chambersburg, Jeanie Ferg of York, and Brian Hepfer-McCleary of Chambersburg; his companion of over 30 years, Claire Shively and her daughter, Nicole Geisel, both of Chambersburg; sisters Beverly Miller Garrenstrom of Portland, OR and Crystal Elaine Myers of Falling Waters, WV; brothers, Edgar H. Miller Jr. and Phillip E. Hepfer, both of Chambersburg; ten grandchildren and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 1 PM on Friday, July 29, 2011 in the chapel of the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road Chambersburg, with visitation from 12-1 PM. Rev. Bill Hughes will officiate. Interment will be private. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter, 2325 Country Rd. Chambersburg, PA 17202.
