John Hepfer

April 1, 1927 — June 20, 2012

John W. Hepfer, Sr., 85, of Chambersburg, PA, died Wednesday morning, June 20, 2012 in the Chambersburg Hospital. Born April 1, 1927 in Chambersburg, he was a son of the late Joseph and Nettie Custer Hepfer. A US Army veteran of WWII, he took part in the original Cannonball Run. John retired from Nitterhouse Concrete and Masonry Products and Mt. Cydonia Sand Company. He was a life member of Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW and a member of the 40 et 8 Club, Burt J. Asper Post 46 American Legion, and Hume-McNeil-Byers Amvets Post 224, all in Chambersburg. One of his favorite pastimes was working puzzles. His wife, Phyllis Jenkins Hepfer, whom he married in July of 1952, preceded him in death on July 19, 2005.

He is survived by four children, Beverly Miller Garrenstrom and husband Richard of Portland, OR, Edgar H. Miller, Jr. and wife Nancy of Chambersburg, Crystal Elaine Myers and husband Butch of Falling Waters, WV, and Phillip E. Hepfer and wife Lisa of Chambersburg; eleven grandchildren; and sixteen great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Lester and Sam; and four sisters, Dorothy, Mink, Ruth, and Florence. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, John W. Hepfer, Jr.; six brothers; and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, June 22, 2012 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA with Rev. Bill Hughes officiating. Interment with military honors by members of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Honor Guard will follow at Parklawns Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7:00-9:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home.
