John Kanuk

John Kanuk, 87, Chambersburg, PA, passed away Monday, May 30, 2016 at ManorCare Health Services in Chambersburg. Born May 3, 1929 in Cambria County, PA, he was a son of the late Lesio “Alexander” and Nancy Berezonsky Kanuk. A graduate of Shade Central City High School in Carinbrook, PA, he went on to receive a Bachelor’s Degree from California University of Pennsylvania. John continued his education by receiving a Master’s Degree from Western Maryland College and his Doctorate from Penn State University. He served as a Staff Sergeant with the US Air Force 39th Fighter Interceptor Squardron during the Korean War and was an instructor with the Airframe Repairman Course. He was later employed as Director of Vocational Education at Scotland School for Veteran’s Children prior to his retirement. He was a member of St. Mary’s Orthodox Church; Burt J. Asper Post 46 American Legion; Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW; and BPO Elks Lodge #600, all in Chambersburg. His beloved wife, Marie Craisheff Kanuk, whom he married August 9, 1952, preceded him in death on December 24, 2014.

He is survived by his daughter, Kathie Lane and husband James of Hershey, PA; his granddaughter, Lauren Lane of Hershey; and his brother, Samuel Kanuk and wife Mary of Central City, PA. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Anna, Mary, and Katherine; and four brothers, Metro, Andrew, Frank, and Steve.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, June 4, 2016 at St. Mary Orthodox Church, 2063 Lincoln Way East, Chambersburg, PA 17202. Father Theodore Pulcini will officiate. Interment with military honors by members of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Honor Guard will follow the service in Parklawns Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday at the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA and one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.
