John L. McCarty, 84 of Fayetteville, PA, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday evening, October 17, 2018 at his home. Born February 15, 1934 in Huntingdon County, he was a son of the late Leslie and Veda Putt McCarty. John served honorably with the US Air Force during the Korean War. He was employed as an electronics technician at Letterkenny Army Depot, retiring April 2, 1989 after 37 years of federal service. He enjoyed hunting and fishing early in his life and more recently enjoyed working with computers.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon Pensinger McCarty, whom he married August 11, 1981; two sons, Richard D. McCarty and wife Diane of Chambersburg and Mark A. McCarty and wife Teresa of Endicott, NY; three step-sons, Paul, David, and Gary Fleegal; two grandchildren, Rebecca and Colin McCarty; three sisters, Barbara Rhoades, Alma Harter, and Natalie McCarty; and two brothers, Andrew and Timothy McCarty. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, October 23, 2018 at Grand Point Church, 2230 Grand Point Road, Chambersburg, PA 17202. Pastor Don Drury will officiate. The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 AM Tuesday at the church. Members of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Honor Guard will conduct military honors immediately following the service.
