John Miner

December 21, 1927 — October 30, 2011

John A. Miner, 83, of Fayetteville, PA, died peacefully Sunday morning, October 30, 2011 at his home. Born December 21, 1927 in Chambersburg, he was a son of the late Charles H. and Naomi McCans Miner. John was a 1946 graduate of the former Chambersburg High School and went on to attend real estate school at the Mont Alto campus of Penn State University. He served in Germany during the Korean War with the US Army and was then employed for more than fifty years by the T.K. Nitterhouse family as a Real Estate Sales Broker. He was a member of Park Avenue United Methodist Church and had served for many years as the church secretary. John was a member of General James Chambers Lodge #801 F &AM, Harrisburg Consistory, the Zembo Temple, the Franklin County Shrine Club, the Scottish Rite Club, and the Chambersburg Club. He was a life member of the Penn State Alumni Association and the Franklin County Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association. He also held membership in Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW, Burt J. Asper Post 46 American Legion, B.P.O. Elks Lodge #600, the Lionel Train Collectors Club of America, and the Train Collector’s Association. John was a member for more than 50 years of the Greene Township Lions Club and was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award in 2010. He was currently a member of the Penn National Lions Club which he was instrumental in founding in 2010. He served on the Board of Directors at Penn State Mont Alto, was a member of SNAP (Support Network at Penn National) and served on the Franklin County Foundation Committee. John served on the Guilford Water Authority for 37 years and also served on the Guilford Township Sewer Authority. He was an avid fan of Penn State football and Joe Paterno and especially enjoyed attending games. In 2010 John donated his collection of unique game buttons issued for every Nittany Lion football game since 1972 to the Mont Alto Campus of Penn State University and the collection is proudly displayed at Conklin Hall.

He is survived by his loving wife, Kathryn Myers Miner, whom he married September 25, 1948; two brothers, Walter E. Miner and wife Louise of Chambersburg and Harold E. Miner and wife Jan of Greensburg, PA; and four nephews, Tim Miner, Pat Miner, Kirby Miner, and Dane Miner.

A Masonic service will be conducted by members of General James Chambers Lodge #801 F& AM at 2:00 PM Friday, November 4, 2011 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. Funeral services will begin immediately following the Masonic service with Rev. Arthur Kuehn and Rev. John Ile officiating. Interment with military honors by members of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Honor Guard will follow in Norland Cemetery. Friends will be received from Noon – 2:00 PM Friday at the funeral home.
