John Prohonic, 88, of Chambersburg, passed away on Thursday, January 18, 2018, at the Chambersburg Hospital. Born August 9, 1929 in Cleveland, OH, he was a son of the late Michael and Elizabeth “Bette” Bauer Prohonic.
John was a graduate of Windber High School in Somerset County, PA. He also earned technical degrees from Pittsburgh Technical Institute and the Western Pennsylvania Institute of Technology. A US Navy veteran, John served honorably during the Korean Conflict. For most of his professional life, he worked for Cesco in Mercersburg, PA where he designed and sold hospital equipment. He was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus 1426 in Chambersburg. John was a family man, a hard worker and provider for his family. He was a great father and a wonderful artist and wood carver. Most of his artwork consisted of birds and other animals but it was also expressed in his children’s Halloween costumes and snow sculptures.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Erma Zabrosky Prohonic, whom he married on June 12, 1954; three children, Lisa Gasswint and husband Scott of Pittsburgh, Lori Group and husband Don of Pittsburgh, and Jon Prohonic of Chambersburg; two grandchildren, Greta Gasswint of Pittsburgh and Nathan Prohonic of Chambersburg. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his brother Michael and his twin brother Donald.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 Am on Wednesday, January 24, 2018, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, PA 17202. Rev. Fr. Brian Olkowski will officiate. Arrangements are entrusted to Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Chambersburg, PA.
