John J. Schwartz, 88, of Fayetteville, PA and formerly of Bowie, MD, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 5, 2021 at his home surrounded by family. Born May 15, 1932 in Philadelphia, PA, he was a son of the late John and Caroline Grossman Schwartz.
A US Army veteran, John served honorably during the Korean War. Following his military service, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Villanova University and later a Master’s degree from the Catholic University in Washington DC. John was working on his Doctorate degree when he started JF Engineering Co. with his dear friend Frank Kubic. He had an extremely fulfilling career at the NSA and NASA before retiring from the federal government. He later began a new and rewarding chapter in private industry as a Vice-President at Stanford Telecom. John was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church. He enjoyed golfing, ballroom dancing, working on his house, carpentry, refinishing antique furniture, gardening and Maryland crabs.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Phyllis M. Morlando Schwartz, whom he married on September 23, 1960; three children, Deborah Tackett and husband Kevin of Bowie, MD, John Schwartz of Bowie, MD and Robert Schwartz of Issue, MD; three grandchildren, Joseph Tackett and wife Nicki of Bristow, VA, Andrew Tackett and wife Masha of Spokane, WA and John Schwartz of Cambridge, MD; three great grandchildren, Anthony, Lucy and Mila Tackett; and two siblings, Madeline McFadden of Landsdale, PA and Robert Schwartz of Smyrna, DE. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his brother, William Schwartz.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 AM on Friday, March 12, 2021 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Avenue, Chambersburg, PA 17201. Rev. Richard Lyons will officiate. Interment will follow the service in Corpus Christi Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 PM on Thursday at the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA 17202. The family requests the omission of flowers and asks that memorial contributions be made in John’s name to the St. Vincent de Paul Society (SVDP)-Corpus Christi, 279 N. 2nd St., Chambersburg, PA 17201. The SVDP helps the local community, those who are struggling with food, rent and utilities.
