John W. Shaffer, 90, a resident at Magnolia’s of Chambersburg, passed away Wednesday morning, December 4, 2013 at ManorCare Health Services, where he had resided for one day. Born August 29, 1923 in Chambersburg, he was a son of the late Tom and Sarah Black Shaffer. John served with the US Army during WWII and was employed for many years as a painter with M. Gordon and Sons, Inc. and was last employed by Painters and Decorators, both in Harrisburg, PA. He was a member of Pond Bank Mennonite Church and his hobbies included singing and playing the guitar. His beloved wife, Betty J. Herdman Shaffer, whom he married June 22, 1946, preceded him in death on March 28, 2007.
He is survived by a son Thomas W. Shaffer and wife Joan of Chambersburg, three daughters Patricia J. Alexander and husband Carl of Chambersburg, Judy D. Ritchey and husband Joseph of Chambersburg, and Lisa M. Dennis and husband Terry of Orbisonia, PA; eight grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Thomas Shaffer of Chambersburg. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Louise.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, December 9, 2013 at the Pond Bank Mennonite Church with Rev. Jeremy Lehman officiating. Interment with military honors by members of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Honor Guard will follow in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Quincy. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM Sunday, December 8, 2013 at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA and one hour prior to the funeral at the church on Monday.
