John W. "Butch" Shatzer

John W. “Butch” Shatzer, 80, of St. Thomas, PA, passed away on Wednesday, December 4, 2024 at the Chambersburg Hospital. Born July 3, 1944 in Chambersburg, he was a son of the late Clarence E. “Buzz” Shatzer and Beatrice F. Baker Shatzer.

Butch was a 1962 graduate of St. Thomas High School. He was employed as an auto mechanic with Sites Garage in St. Thomas, McKnight Motors in Chambersburg and finally was the owner/operator of Edenville Garage for 20 years until his retirement. Butch was a member of Chambersburg Alliance Church. He was also a member of the Nashville Tennessee Steel Guitar Association and the Ozark Steel Guitar Association in Branson, MO, and enjoyed traveling to both for conventions where he met many friends over the years. Butch also enjoyed showing his 1931 Chevy Coupe at car shows, dirt track racing, sprint car racing, collecting arrowheads, and hunting for Morel mushrooms. He and his wife enjoyed traveling, having visited all 50 states and rode all but one of the steam railroads left in the country.

Butch is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ellen A. Barmont Shatzer, whom he married on October 9, 1964; one daughter, Joyce Reed of South Mountain; three granddaughters, Jasmine Seibert and husband Todd of Dry Run, PA, Heather Petit and husband Dave of Bedford, PA, and Tia Shearer of South Mountain, PA; and two great grandchildren, Robbie Girosky and Berkley Seibert. Aside from his parents, Butch was preceded in death by two siblings, Judith Crawford, and James Shatzer.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 21, 2024 at Chambersburg Alliance Church, 230 Siloam Road, Chambersburg, PA 17201. Pastor Jeff McCracken will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church. Arrangements are entrusted to the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg, PA.
