John R. Slick, 88 of Chambersburg, passed away on Thursday, July 27, 2023, at Chambers Pointe, where he had been a resident for the last 8 years. Born on March 28, 1935, in Lewistown, PA, he was a son of the late Howard Slick and Stella Walker Slick. After the death of his mother, John and his younger siblings were placed in an orphanage in Mt. Joy, PA.
At the age of 12, John was chosen by John and Ruie Peckman to join their family in Chambersburg, PA. John worked on the family farm, and was quickly accepted as part of the Peckman family. He came to call John and Ruie, “Mom and Dad”. John continued to farm with the Peckman’s, later joining Mervin, on his farm. John was the “milkman” at Pleasant View Dairy for several years. In 1973, John left farming to work for Grove Manufacturing, where he retired after 25 years of service. John was a long-time member of Mission Hill Church, formerly Chambersburg Brethren in Christ Church, where he helped with their toddler class for many years, being known by all as “Uncle John”. He enjoyed music, from gospel to classical, hunting, fishing, and mowing the grass.
He is survived by his children, J. Robert Slick Jr. (Karla) of Chambersburg, Susan Grove (Alan) of Gilbertsville, PA, and Amy Avella (David) of Cherry Hill, NJ; four grandchildren, Christopher Slick (Jori), Allyson Pittman (Aaron), and Jonathan and Andrew Grove; three great grandchildren, Caleb, Noelle, Lila Slick; two biological siblings, Vernon and Sharon; and one Peckman sibling, Wilma Young. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Fannie L. Byers Slick, on July 12, 2020; seven biological siblings, Pete, Geneva, Mary, Dorothy, Catherine, Leon, and Donald; and four Peckman siblings, Grace, Lester, Miriam, and Mervin.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at 11 AM at Mission Hill Church, 465 Center St., Chambersburg, PA, where Pastor Kevin Witter will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Air Hill Cemetery on Wednesday, August 2 at 2 PM. Arrangements are entrusted to the Thomas L.
