John E. Slimmer, Jr., 72, of Chambersburg, PA, died Sunday afternoon, August 26, 2012 at Chambersburg Hospital. Born February 24, 1940 in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late John Earl Slimmer, Sr. and Elsie Avinger Slimmer. John was a 1958 graduate of the Chambersburg High School and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and his Master’s Degree in Elementary and Secondary Guidance and Counseling from Shippensburg University. A licensed Professional Counselor, John was employed as a Guidance Counselor with the Chambersburg Area School District and offered private counseling at his home. During his career in education and counseling, he was recognized locally as Distinguished Teacher of the Year in 1965 and nationally as School Counselor of the Year in 1976. He was a member of the National Board of Certified Counselors and the National Board of Certified School Counselors as well as numerous other professional and education associations. He was currently a member of the Brethren Fellowship and was a former long-time member of Trinity Lutheran Church, both in Chambersburg.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Kramer Slimmer, whom he married July 23, 1988; three children, Shari Kramer Bentzel of Middletown, MD, Matthew R. Kramer of York, PA, and Andrew R. Kramer of Chambersburg; five grandchildren; and a number of cousins.
The family will receive friends from 4:00-8:00 PM Friday, August 31, 2012 at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. A memorial service celebrating John’s life will be held at 6:00 PM, Saturday, September 1, 2012 at the Brethren Fellowship, 339 Lincoln Way East, Chambersburg, PA with Rev. Manny Diaz officiating. Friends will be received immediately following the service in the church’s fellowship hall. Private interment will be at Norland Cemetery.
