John L. Stumbaugh, Jr., age 82 of Chambersburg, PA; passed away in the Falling Spring Nursing and Rehab Center on Tuesday, December 13, 2011. Born October 7, 1929 in Waynesboro, PA, he was the son of the late John L. and Laura Crider Stumbaugh.
A US Army veteran during the Korean Conflict, John served his country honorably after graduating from Chambersburg High School in 1947; then moved on to pursue a career in education, graduating from Shippensburg State Teachers College in 1951 and Columbia University in 1965. John taught at several schools in the local area, including being the last to teach at the former Welsh Run School, James Buchanan, the former Central Junior High School, and J. Frank Faust Junior High School. Additionally, he was a Professor at Shippensburg University, teaching history, and retiring in 1991 after 28 years. He was a member of the King Street United Brethren Church, the American Legion Post 945, the Kittatinny Historical Society, Meals on Wheels, and AARP. .
Surviving are his loving wife of 54 years, Patricia Zimmerman Stumbaugh, whom he married on November 27, 1957; his children, Vicki S. Stern (husband Lewis) of Chambersburg, PA and John L. Stumbaugh III (wife Lisa) of Shippensburg, PA; and three grandchildren, Amanda Stern of Chambersburg, PA; Abigail Stern of Pittsburgh, PA; and Lauren Stumbaugh of Shippensburg, PA. .
Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 16, 2011 at 1 PM in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Rd., Chambersburg, PA, with Rev. Clinton Bingamin and Rev. Paul B. Baker officiating. Interment will follow in Stoufferstown Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 15 from 6-8 PM and one hour prior to the service in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to Falling Spring Nursing and Rehab Center, 201 Franklin Farm Lane, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
