John R. “Poncho” Thomas, Sr., age 59, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away on Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at the Chambersburg Hospital. Born January 14, 1953 in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late John W. Thomas and Marie Myers Thomas.
A line worker for the Pennsylvania Rail Road, Poncho served for over 20 years. In addition, he worked for Staples Distribution Center for over 15 years as a maintenance mechanic. Poncho was a member of the Pond Bank Mennonite Church, the Greencastle VFW and the Marine Corps League in Chambersburg; he enjoyed working on cars, street Rods, going to car shows, watching NASCAR, family gatherings, and his dogs, Harley and Sadie.
Surviving is his wife Debra Beard Thomas, whom he married on July 2, 1999; his children, John R. Thomas, Jr of Greencastle, PA, Danny Jo Thomas of Marion, PA, and David W. Monninger (wife Barbara) of St. Thomas, PA; six grandchildren; two siblings, Frank Thomas (wife Wanda) of Chambersburg, PA and Bonnie Downin (husband Paul) of Chambersburg, PA; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, December 10, 2012 at 11:00 AM at the Pond Bank Mennonite Church, 6555 Duffield Rd., Chambersburg, PA 17202; where Pastor Jeremy Lehman will officiate. Interment will follow in Beautiful View Cemetery, State Line, PA at 3 PM on Monday. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the above named church and address.
