John Wanamaker

December 28, 1940 — July 24, 2015

John C. Wanamaker, 74, of Chambersburg and a resident of Magnolias of Chambersburg for the past year, went home to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on Friday, July 24, 2015 at the Chambersburg Hospital. Born December 28, 1940 in Newark, NJ, he was a son of the late Charles C. and Marjorie Cain Wanamaker.

John was a 1960 graduate of Ft. Lauderdale High School. He enlisted in the Navy in 1963, where he served as a Hospital Corpsman for 7 years, with one tour in Vietnam from 1969-1970. John then transferred to the Medical Service Corps, and retired in 1984 as a Lieutenant Commander after 21 years of service. After retirement, he served as the Business Administrator at Camp Joy-El in Greencastle, PA, and also worked part-time as a courier at the Chambersburg Hospital. He was a member of the Gideons and The Open Door Church, where he served as an Elder and volunteered in various other capacities. John enjoyed life. He especially loved traveling, taking spontaneous trips, bowling, dining out and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Bernice Wanamaker, whom he married on June 10, 2006; two sons, Charles D. Wanamaker (wife Cheryl) of Turnersville, NJ, and Jeffrey S. Wanamaker (wife Jean) of Milton, FL; three step-children, Timothy A. Perry (wife Allison) of Baltimore, MD, Mark A. Perry (wife Alysia) of Pueblo, CO, and Corrie Tiffany (husband Matthew) of Chambersburg; four grandchildren, Brett, Christa, Chad, and Kathryn Wanamaker; six step-grandchildren, Paige, Emma, and Nathan Perry, and Jeremiah, Elayna and William Tiffany; and three siblings, Nancy Woldow (husband Norman) of St. Louis, MO, Carol LaGraves (husband Walter) of Big Pine Key, FL, and William Wanamaker (wife Cora) of Lemoore, CA. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his first wife, Karen J. (Offringa) Wanamaker on December 27, 2002.

A funeral service to honor John’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, July 30, 2015 at The Open Door Church, 600 Miller St. Chambersburg, PA 17201. Rev. Mike Sanders will officiate. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 29, 2015 from 6:00-8:00pm at the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Rd. Chambersburg, PA and one hour prior to the service at the Church on Thursday. A graveside service (family-only) will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, July 31, 2015 at Ft. Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Gideons International, 1904 Philadelphia Ave, Chambersburg, PA 1720, to Camp Joy-El, 3741 Joy El Dr, Greencastle, PA 17225, or to The Open Door Church Fellowship Hall Fund at the above address.
