Johnnie Meek

Johnnie C. Meek, 85, of Chambersburg, PA, died Monday evening, May 26, 2014 at the Penn Hall Nursing Center. Born September 29, 1928 in Mineral, Washington, he was a son of the late Crawford and Louise Rhodes Meek. He attended Morton (WA) High School and enlisted in the US Army at Fort Lewis, WA. He was assigned to Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland and then served in Italy during WWII. After the war he was assigned to the 833rd Ordinance Base Depot and sent to Letterkenny Ordinance Depot. He was later discharged at the Carlisle Barracks. He attended Penn State University and Shippensburg University. Johnnie was employed as a Computer Systems Analyst at Letterkenny prior to his retirement. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Chambersburg and a life member of B.P.O. Elks Lodge 600, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 842, Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW, and the Goodwill Fire Company. He also held membership in Burt J. Asper Post 46 American Legion, Hume-McNeil-Byers AMVETS Post 224, and AARP Chapter 2840. He was a former member of the US Power Squadrons, the Coast Guard Auxiliary, the 21 Day Retreat Organization, the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Honor Guard, and the Fayetteville Athletic Association. He was a 10 pin bowler for 51 years and hosted the Sugars Shuffleboard League at his home for 31 years. He enjoyed travel, photos, history, playing Double Deck Pinochle and Chess. His loving wife, Hazel Frank Meek, whom he married October 8, 1948 in Hagerstown, MD, preceded him in death on October 26, 2003.

He is survived by four children, Cheryl “Sherry” Chastulik of Chambersburg, Dennis E. Meek and wife Cheryl of Tunkhannock, PA, Debra J. Meek of Oakhurst, CA, and Carol L. Meckley and husband Bradley of York; five grandchildren, Moonfeather Chastulik, Timothy Chastulik, Joseph Lech, Tyler Meek, and Garrett Lech; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother, Willie Meek and wife Pauline of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Friday, May 30, 2014 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA with Rev. Donald C. Nolder officiating. Interment with military honors by members of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Honor Guard will follow at Parklawns Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from Noon-1:00 PM Friday at the funeral home.
