Joseph Irvin Sharar

Joseph Irvin Sharar, 93, of Chambersburg, passed away on Saturday, June 22, 2024 at his home. Born October 27, 1930 in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late James I. and Hattie L. Myers Sharar. His beloved wife, Arlene Barnes Sharar, preceded him in death on August 22, 2018.

 Joseph was a 1949 graduate of Mercersburg High School. A US Marine Corps veteran, he served honorably during the Korean War. He was employed for many years as a manager with CESCO in Mercersburg until his retirement in 1992. Joseph was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chambersburg and the American Legion Post 517 in Mercersburg. A talented baseball player in his early years, he was given a chance to play Minor League baseball but decided not to so he could be with his family. He enjoyed fishing, boating, golfing, woodworking and was an avid Penn State Football Fan.

 He is survived by three daughters, Sherry Pittman (husband Garry) of Staunton, VA, Linda Sharar of Chambersburg, and Jodie Laughlin of Chambersburg; three grandchildren, Samantha Shaw of Staunton, VA, Kandie Matox (husband Chris) of Staunton, VA, and Cody Laughlin of Myrtle Beach, SC; four great grandchildren; and eight great-great grandchildren. Aside from his parents and wife, Joseph was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley Ann Sharar; grandson, Ryan Joseph Laughlin; and grandson-in-law, Duane Shaw.

 Services and interment will be private. Arrangements are entrusted to the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 431 Philadelphia Avenue, Chambersburg, PA 17201, Antietam Human Society at antietamhumanesociety.org, or to SpiriTrust Lutheran Home Care & Hospice at spiritrustlutheran.org.
