Joseph Anthony Washabaugh, Sr., age 79, of Chambersburg, PA passed away in the presence of his children and wife on Thursday morning, May 1, 2014 at his home. Born May 6, 1934 in Chambersburg, he was a son of the late Paul Edgar Washabaugh, Sr., and Effie Loretta Foose Washabaugh.
A 1953 graduate of the former Chambersburg High School, Joseph started his career at J.J. Newberry’s as an assistant manager, then H.J. Heinz Co. for 19 years as a Maintenance Supervisor, and retired from Knouse Foods as a Maintenance Supervisor in 1990 after 20 years of service. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and enjoyed bowling. He supported his grandchildren by teaching them how to fish and hunt and loved to attend their ball games. Joseph was a member of The Open Door Church where he volunteered in the office for over 20 years. He was also a member of Knights of Columbus #1426 in Chambersburg.
Joseph is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Betty J. Edwards Washabaugh, whom he married on December 31, 1954; four children, Theresa J. Pensinger and husband Michael of Chambersburg, Joseph A. Washabaugh, Jr. and wife Cathy of Chambersburg, Jeffrey L. Washabaugh and companion Elly Wise of Shippensburg, and Michael J. Washabaugh and wife Julie of Chambersburg; four grandchildren, Ryan M. Washabaugh of Chambersburg, Joseph A. Washabaugh, III and wife Lacy of Martinsburg, WV, Michelle Wagner and husband Ashley of Chambersburg, and Michael Pensinger, Jr. and wife Tammi of Chambersburg; ten great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Robert F. Washabaugh of Chambersburg, and Paul E. Washabaugh, Jr. of Shippensburg. Aside from his parents he is preceded in death by a sister, Helen Oyler and two sisters at birth.
A memorial service will be held at 3:30 PM on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at The Open Door Church, 600 Miller St. Chambersburg, PA 17201. Pastor Mike Sanders will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. A private family interment will be held in Clearfield, PA at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to Thomas L. Geisel Funeral home and Cremation Center, Chambersburg, PA.
