Josephine Stouffer

Josephine Geedy Stouffer, formerly of Hillen Lane, Chambersburg, PA, passed away Monday evening, August 10, 2015 at Providence Place. Born September 11, 1934 in Lewistown, PA, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Calder B. and Ethel Peters Geedy. A 1952 graduate of the Lewistown High School, she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education in 1956 and a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education in 1968 from Shippensburg University. Mrs. Stouffer taught first grade at Greencastle Antrim School District in 1956 at the Brown’s Mill School. She served as Head Teacher for Chambersburg’s Head Start program at its inception the summer of 1965. She then taught private kindergarten at St. John’s United Church of Christ from 1963-1966 and went on to teach public kindergarten for the Chambersburg Area School District at Falling Spring, Guilford Hills, and Scotland Elementary Schools from 1966 until her retirement in 1993. She was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ where she taught Sunday school for nine years and served on numerous church boards. She founded the Pre-school program at the church in 1963. Mrs. Stouffer was a member of the AARP, the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, the Pennsylvania State Retirees, the National Education Association, the Pennsylvania State Education Association, and the American Association of University Women where she had served as a board member. She was a former board member of the Totem Pole Playhouse.
She was a member and Past President from 1961-62 of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She enjoyed traveling, reading, and movies. Her husband, Thomas G. Stouffer, whom she married on December 26, 1955, preceded her in death on July 24, 2006.

She is survived by three children, Thomas Stephen Stouffer and wife Janice Wealand Stouffer of Elizabethtown, Jeffrey Eugene Stouffer and wife Margaret Luck Stouffer of Greencastle, and Nancy Suzanne Stouffer Lehman and husband Bryan of Chambersburg; nine grandchildren, Joshua (wife Kristy), Matthew, and Laura (husband Larry) Stouffer of Elizabethtown; Adam (wife Heather) and Benjamin Stouffer of Greencastle; Kristen (husband Tony), Angela, Brittany (husband Clay), and Samuel Lehman of Chambersburg; eight great-grandchildren; and her brother, Roger S. Geedy of Rochester, NY.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, August 15, 2015 at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 1811 Lincoln Way East, Chambersburg, PA. Rev Mark Ruzicka will officiate. Interment will follow at Norland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM Friday at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA.
