Joyce E. Hanan, age 85, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, June 19, 2018, at the Chambersburg Hospital. Born May 8, 1933, in Chambersburg, PA, she was the daughter of the late Nevin Arthur and Virginia Ellen Stephens Short.
Joyce was a 1951 graduate of the former Chambersburg High School. Joyce went on to be a successful entrepreneur in the floor covering industry, and finally to become the President of the Maryland Floor Covering Association, retiring in 2013. Even at 85, Joyce was very spunky and full of life; she enjoyed gardening, baking for friends and family, discussing conservative politics, volunteering with the Salvation Army, where she served in the Ladies Auxiliary, being active in her church, organizing class reunions (CHS Class of 1951), and cheering for the Washington Redskins and Washington Capitals.
Surviving are four children, Linda Cook of D’iberville, MS, Barbara Ellen Matthews (husband Ronnie) of Artesia, NM, Charles A. “Chuck” Seiders (wife April) of Manassas, VA, Stacie A. Talbot (husband Brian) of Oakton, VA; eight grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and one sister, Marcilyn J. Hakes of Thousand Oaks, CA. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two siblings, Nevin A. “Bud” Short, Jr. and Margaret “Peg” Short.
Services and interment will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are entrusted to the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Chambersburg, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Salvation Army, 169 Lincoln Way W, Chambersburg, PA 17201 or to King Street Church, 162 E. King St, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
