Judith “Judy” Kay Houser, 60, of Chambersburg, died peacefully Saturday morning, July 9, 2011 at her home surrounded by her family. Born February 28, 1951 in Chambersburg, she was a daughter of Mary “Dolly” Patterson Green who resides at Menno Haven and the late Leroy “Mope” Green. Judy was a graduate of the Chambersburg Area Senior High School. She and her husband owned and operated the former Mark’s Mini Market in Chambersburg and she was at one time employed at the former Byer Brothers Florist. Judy retired in 2010 from Totem Pole Playhouse where she served as the Executive Director for six years. During her twenty-six years of employment at the playhouse she held the position of Box Office Manager and later General Manager prior to being named Executive Director.
She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, B.P.O.Elks Lodge #600 Ladies Auxiliary, Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Ladies Auxiliary, the Rotary Club of Chambersburg, and had served on the Pennsylvania Travel Council Advisory Board and the Franklin County Visitor’s Bureau Advisory Board. Judy especially enjoyed spending time with her family and cooking for them on Sundays. She owned Limestone Hill Primitives and loved flower gardening, traveling, sewing, and playing cards. She was a member of the Elks Club of Chambersburg Ladies Bowling League for 30 years.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Mark J. Houser, whom she married May 22, 1967; two sons, Brian Houser and wife Katrina of Chambersburg and Curtis Houser of St. Thomas; four grandchildren, Tyler, Bradley, Jenalea, and Brady; and a great-grandson, Brody. She is also survived by two sisters, Nancy Petrucci and husband James of Lancaster, and Joy Hafer and husband Mike of Chambersburg; her mother-in-law Nancy Houser of Chambersburg; sister-in-law Barb Keller and husband Tom of Greencastle, her best friend Sue McMurtray of Chambersburg, numerous nieces and nephews, and her beloved dog, Folger.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, July 15, 2011 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. Chaplain John Winckler will officiate. Private interment will be in Lincoln Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 AM Friday at the funeral home.
