Julia Monn

April 24, 1935 — November 7, 2014

Julia LaRue Hockenberry Monn of Fayetteville, PA entered into God’s eternal care on Friday evening, November 7, 2014 at her home. Born April 24, 1935 in Fannettsburg, PA, she was a daughter of the late Herbert Merle Hockenberry and Elda Adaline Donathan Hockenberry Custer. She was also the step-daughter of the late Albert E. Custer. Before moving to Fayetteville in 1943 in her early years she was reared by her late aunts Ethel and Rosella “Babe” Donathan of Fannettsburg. She was a 1953 graduate of the former Chambersburg High School. An active member of Otterbein United Methodist Church in Fayetteville, she served as secretary, youth coordinator, and in several offices on the Administrative Board. She was a member of John Yohe’s Samaritan Sunday School Class. For thirty-one years she was employed by the former Tobey’s Department Store in Chambersburg. She also worked for four years at the former Farmers Marketing System and for seven years at the former Fashion Lane. She was a charter member of the Fayetteville Volunteer Fire Company Auxiliary and was a twenty-five year Perfect Attendance member of the former Heart of the Valley Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Walter W. Monn, Jr., whom she married November 13, 1960. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews; great and great-great nieces and nephews; and numerous step nieces and nephews, Robert Monn, Phyllis Hart, Susan Monn, Douglas Monn, David Monn, Daniel Monn, Larry Beck, Kay Heavner, Evelyn Dale, Kenneth Beck, Michael Hockenberry, and Herbert Hockenberry. In addition to her parents and step father, she was preceded in death by her sister, Emma “Kate” Monn on October 26, 2011 and her brother, H. Lynn Hockenberry on January 6, 2002; two sisters-in-laws, Mary Noll Hockenberry and Ruth Monn Beck Brookens; a brother-in-law, Gordon “Dutch” Brookens; and a niece, Peggy Riggins.

Julia’s life will be celebrated with a memorial service at 11:00 AM Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at Otterbein United Methodist Church, 61 West Main Street, Fayetteville, PA with Rev. Bruce Gowe, Rev. Michael Baumgardner, and Rev. Thomas Willis officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Julia L. Monn to the Otterbein United Methodist Church, 61 West Main Street or to the Fayetteville Volunteer Fire Company, 101 West Main Street, both in Fayetteville, PA 17222.
