Junnie Blankenship

Junnie Gaton Blankenship, Jr., 83, of Fayetteville, PA, died Saturday morning, April 14, 2012 at Waynesboro Hospital. Born April 1, 1929 to the late Junnie Gaton Blankenship, Sr. and Addie Lowder Blankenship, he was raised and educated in Chase City, VA. Junnie moved to Washington, DC as a teenager. He joined the DC Air National Guard and was called to active duty with the US Air Force in 1951 during the Korean Conflict. He attended communication school in Cheyenne Wyoming and was assigned to the White House Communication Squadron. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force in 1952, and returned to his duty station with the DC Air National Guard. After leaving the military, he was employed by Western Electric in the installation department. He later retired from Western Electric – AT&T after more than thirty years of service.

He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Fayetteville. Junnie was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing in many tournaments while residing at Penn National. He especially enjoyed spending time fishing and hunting with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Kathryn Reed Blankenship, whom he married September 9, 1950; two daughters, Vicki Oliver and husband Everett of Erie, PA and Karen McMakin and husband Mark of Olney, MD; three grandchildren, Sean Robert and Erin Elizabeth McMakin and Christian Edward Oliver; as well as a brother, John Blankenship and wife Shirley of Chambersburg. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Stephen Reed Blankenship, and four brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at Calvary United Methodist Church, Fayetteville, PA. Rev. Clyde H. Deshong, III will officiate. Entombment with military honors by members of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Honor Guard will follow at Parklawns Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM Monday at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA.
