Kathleen V. (Hutzell) Bayer, age 84, of Chambersburg, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 3, 2011 at the Village of Laurel Run in Adams County. Born on October 20, 1927 in Hagerstown, MD, she was a daughter of the late Elmer Cleveland Hutzell and Lena V. (Gainer) Hutzell. She was the widow of John B. Bayer Sr., who preceded her in death on October 3, 2009.
A loving mother and homemaker, Kathleen enjoyed cooking, sewing, and gardening. She also cherished her duties with Camp Joy-El’s Release Time Ministry. She was a member of the Grace Brethren Church in Chambersburg, and a former member of the Grace Brethren Church in Hagerstown, where she helped in the Cradle Role Nursery. In her later years, she enjoyed participating in pastoral visits alongside her son, John.
She is survived by four children, Bonnie Garrett and husband, Gary, of Lewisburg, TN, Audrey Willard and husband, Joe, of Smithsburg, MD, John B. Bayer, Jr. and wife, Tammy, of Chambersburg, and Sharon Young and husband, Marvin, of Chambersburg; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. The last of her immediate family, she was preceded in death by a brother, Elwood Hutzell, 3 half-brothers, Leroy C. Hutzell, Kenneth E. Hutzell, and Eugene K. McDermit, and 2 half-sisters, Helen E. McDermit and Madelin D. McDermit.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. Her son, Rev. John B. Bayer, Jr. will officiate. Interment will follow in Parklawns Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00-8:00 PM on Monday and from 9-10 AM on Tuesday.
