Kenneth A. “Mike” “Shoopy”, Shoop, age 87, of Upper Strasburg, PA, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at his home surrounded by his loving family and friends. Born in Orrstown, PA, on April 11, 1928, he was the son of the late Wendall and Elsie Hoover Shoop.
A U.S. Marine and Army veteran, Mr. Shoop served honorably in both services. His service included WWII, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam Conflict, where he was awarded the Bronze Star. Mr. Shoop retired in 1969 as a Command Sargent Major from the Army. Shoopy continued his service in the USPS, where he retired in 1989 as post-master of the Upper Strasburg Post Office. He was a member of the Shippensburg VFW, the Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Letterkenny Rod and Gun Club, the Shippensburg Fish and Game Association, and the Orrstown Lodge No. 262 F.& A.M. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and animals.
Surviving is his wife of 61 years, Betsy “Nancy” Wright Shoop, whom he married on August 22, 1953; four children, Edwin Shoop of Chambersburg, PA, Donna Moore (Tom) of Upper Strasburg, PA, Pamela Martin of Japan, and Karen Brady (Greg) of Freeport, PA; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three siblings, Marjorie Killian of Shippensburg, PA, Garnet Shoop of Spring Run, PA, and Lee Shoop of Chambersburg, PA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Harold R. , Donald H., Wendall, Jr., and Joe Shoop and two sisters, Bernita G. Vaughn and Betty Clever.
A Memorial Service to honor Shoopy’s life will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2015 at 2 PM at the Upper Strasburg Church of God, 9716 Upper Strasburg Rd., Upper Strasburg, PA; where Rev. Bill Bowman will officiate. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Khan and the Oncology Nurses, Dr. Kent, Laura, Missy, and the infusion center Nurses, SpiriTrust Lutheran Palliative Care and Hospice. Arrangements are entrusted to the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Chambersburg, PA. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the above church and address or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
