Kenneth S. Stake, 74, of Chambersburg, PA, died unexpectedly on Saturday morning, October 12, 2013 in the emergency room of Chambersburg Hospital. Born June 18, 1939 in Newburg, he was a son of the late Homer J. and Mabel Gipe Stake. A 1956 graduate of the Chambersburg Area Senior High School, he went on to receive a Bachelor’s Degree from Shippensburg University in 1960 and a Master’s Degree in Mathematics in 1966 from Florida State University. Mr. Stake was a mathematics teacher in the Southern Huntingdon County School District from 1960-1962 and then taught in the Chambersburg Area School District from 1962-1994 where he served as Math Department Chairperson for nineteen years from 1975 until retiring in 1994. He had also served as Class Advisor to the Class of 1966, Advisor of the National Honor Society, and Co-Advisor of the Mu-Alpha-Theta Math Club. Following his retirement he tutored students in mathematics from his home for more than 10 years.
He was listed in the Outstanding Secondary Educators in America in 1973 and Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers in 1992. Mr. Stake was a former member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Chambersburg, the former Franklin County Heritage, Inc., the Chambersburg Lions Club, and the National Education Association. He served on the Board of Directors and as Board President of the former Franklin County Teachers Credit Union (now 1st Ed Credit Union). He was an avid golfer and enjoyed hunting. He also had an interest in computers and was instrumental in the introduction of computers to the Chambersburg Area Senior High School.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Ott Stake whom he married August 22, 1964; his son, Bradley R. Stake and wife Jennifer; three grandchildren, Joshua, Aubrey, and Addison; two sisters, Carole Diehl and husband Robert of Newburg, and Vicki Hopkins and husband William, III of Newville; a brother, James Edward Stake and wife Rose of Steelton; a nephew, Eric Stake; and two nieces, Amy Hopkins Folk and Amanda Hopkins Hansen.
Family and friends are invited to a memorial service at 11:00 AM Wednesday, October 16, 2013 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA with Rev. Thomas Goode officiating. Private interment, prior to the service, will be in Norland Cemetery.
