Larry E. Bowling, 72, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away Thursday afternoon, July 31, 2014 at his home, surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with leukemia. Born August 30, 1941 in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late Charles E. and Sarah C. Harrison Bowling. A 1959 graduate of the Chambersburg Area Senior High School, Larry served with the United States Marine Corps. He retired from the United States Postal Service. Larry was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church and also attended Salvation Army Church. He loved the Minnesota Vikings, enjoyed watching his grandchildren participate in sports, liked country music, and volunteered with Meals on Wheels. Prior to his illness, he enjoyed walking with his neighbor Jerome. Larry was very proud of his grandchildren, especially Brandon, who is serving with the US Army in Afghanistan.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sally G. Bowling, whom he married April 20, 1963; three daughters, Barbara L. Shaffer and husband Fred, Loretta E. Albright and husband David, and Tracey E. Moore and husband Charles; twelve grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Linda Helman and husband John, of Greencastle and Kathleen Atherton of Chambersburg. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Tuesday, August 5, 2014 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA with Major Duane Harris officiating. Interment with military honors by members of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Honor Guard will follow at Parklawns Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7:00-9:00 PM Monday and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the funeral home.
