Lavona Roof Hoover, 86, a resident at Menno Haven passed away at 9:14 PM Wednesday, November 30, 2011 at the nursing home. Born August 16, 1925 in Chambersburg, she was a daughter of the late Raymond K. and Verna B. Willis Roof. Lavona was a graduate of the former Chambersburg High School and the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. She later attended Shippensburg University where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in nursing and her Master’s Degree in Elementary Counseling. A Registered Nurse, she was employed at one time in the Emergency Department at Chambersburg Hospital and from 1962 - 1988 she was employed as a school nurse by the Chambersburg Area School District, retiring as the Supervisor of Nursing. She was a member of Central Presbyterian Church where she was active with the church choir, the sewing group, and many other church activities. She was a member and Past President of the church’s Women’s Association. Her other memberships include the Nurse’s Alumni Association at the University of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, and AARP. She enjoyed needlepoint, jigsaw puzzles, playing bridge, and traveling. Her beloved husband, Clarence E. Hoover, whom she married August 16, 1947, preceded her in death on April 7, 2002.
She is survived by four daughters, Cynthia A. Dinsmore and husband Dale of Chambersburg, Jenine H. Grove and husband Michael of Shippensburg, Nancy I. H. Hershey and husband Brian of Shippensburg, and Harriett Peters and husband Ralph of Chambersburg; two grandchildren, Quinn Vanderau of Waynesboro, and Kathleen Vanderau of Centereach, NY; and a sister, Ida McClure of Chambersburg. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Raymond Roof, Jr.
The family will receive friends from 7:00-8:00 PM Monday, December 5, 2011 in the Chapel at Menno Haven, 2075 Scotland Avenue, Chambersburg, PA. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at Central Presbyterian Church, 40 Lincoln Way West, Chambersburg, PA. Private interment, prior to the memorial service, will be in Norland Cemetery.
