Lawrence (Larry) G. Mohr, 89 of Chambersburg, PA, passed away on Friday, April 1, 2016, at Menno Haven. He was born in Mohrtown, a “Place” near Point Pleasant, West Virginia. He was the son of the late Garland John and Carrie Stevens Mohr. His wife, Clara G. Mohr, preceded him in death on October 9, 2006.
Larry graduated from Point Pleasant High School. After graduation and at the time of World War II, Larry proudly served his country in the United States Navy. After the war he attended Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. From there he entered and graduated Cum Laude from the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. Upon returning to Point Pleasant, he operated a funeral home and was active in the Presbyterian Church, Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce. Most recently, he was an active member and life elder of Central Presbyterian Church, Chambersburg, PA.
He was a member of the Minturn Masonic Lodge No. 19 A.F. & A.M. for more than 50 years. Larry and his wife, Clara, relocated to Chambersburg, where he worked as a representative for Federated Funeral Directors of America before retiring in 1993.
Larry had many hobbies and his favorites included socializing with others, fishing trips to Canada, growing beautiful roses and finishing antique reproduction furniture.
He is survived by two daughters, Dr. Martha, wife of Douglas Ellwood, of Franklin, TN, Mary Mohr of Chambersburg, PA and son, Joe Mohr, of Dallastown, PA; four grandchildren, Brian Ellwood and Kristin Ellwood of Denver, CO, David Ellwood of Franklin, TN and Elise Stendal of Chambersburg, PA; a brother, John A. (wife, Sandy) Mohr, of Columbus, OH and several cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday, April 6, 2016, at the chapel at Menno Haven, 2075 Scotland Avenue, Chambersburg, PA 17201 where Reverend Scott Bowerman and Chaplain Robert Keener will officiate. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 5 from 6 - 8 PM at the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA 17202. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Central Presbyterian Church, 40 Lincoln Way West, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
